Ugh. As a parent this is scary. A lot of kids connect with their friends online or through apps on their phones. This can give them a sense of privacy and maturity.
HOWEVER a key problem is how do you define a “friend”. If we are talking about someone who you know well through school, and the talk and sharing is genuinely harmless, then probably ok if your parents aren’t aware. But we have seen kids become confused about a friend is when they meet online.
Take the example of someone you meet playing an online game, or something like Pokemon GO. You might engage with them daily, perhaps for hours at a time. You might feel like that person is now a friend.
That is a very DANGEROUS person to keep hidden from your parents.
Our research shows the shocking number of ‘bad people’ who pretend to be someone else in order to lure children to them. Whilst meeting someone offline for the first time to collect Pokemon together might feel harmless, chances are it is a request for disaster.
Finally, ask yourself why you want to keep these relationships secret. We would suggest actually discussing it with your parents and setting mutually agreed boundaries - they will understand you need some privacy, and you might find you get more than you would by sneaking around.
