Important Refresher: Pokemon GO Dangers

Pokemon GO has taken the world by storm, and as with all new technologies, society is having a hard time adjusting to the dangers it potentially presents. All people are potentially in danger because of Pokemon GO. Though it may seem completely harmless, Niantic's augmented reality video game has brought to light several issues with video games that get people out and moving in the real world. Pokemon GO dangers are serious and should be avoided whenever possible. Here are a few ways to stay out of danger when playing Pokemon Go.

Play in Groups

Often we do not think of the dangers that are lurking around the corner. Playing in groups will deter people of a threatening nature from approaching you while you are innocently making your way to Pokestops or catching a rare Vaporeon. In North Carolina, after one player was stabbed in a park, 30 other players assisted the victim and scared off the assailant. Playing with friends gives you an added level of protection because someone looking to rob or harm you will be far less likely to approach a group.

Do not Play and Drive

Though it may seem an easy way to ease the heavy load of walking associated with this augmented reality game, driving while playing Pokemon GO is incredibly dangerous. Several car accidents have already been associated with Pokemon GO and on at least one occasion the accident was fatal. Because you are moving down actual streets, it is easy to understand wanting to get to Pokestops by car rather than walking. However, you are far more susceptible to an accident when playing Pokemon GO than if you are focusing on driving. If you absolutely feel the need to be in an automobile while playing Pokemon GO the solution is simple, a co-pilot. Your co-pilot can tell you where the Pokemon are or where to go while you keep both eyes on the road.

Never Trespass

Trespassing is dangerous regardless of the situation. The owner of the property you are on will not necessarily know that your intentions are pure. The owner of the property will most likely think the worst before they think you are just playing a game. Think about trespassing from the owner's perspective, would you feel like someone was being harmless, or would you feel like the safety of your family took precedence? Especially at night, crossing property lines to play Pokemon GO is a terrible idea and a very easy way to get harmed. Be sure and play Pokemon go on public property or where you know you have permission to be. Consider your safety before any aspect of the game. There may be another opportunity to catch that Charizard, is it worth it to spend the night in the hospital?  On several occasions since its release, Pokemon GO players have been both shot and shot at for being in the wrong place at the wrong time or pointing their cell phones toward the wrong house.

Don't Meet Up With Strangers

As with any social media tool, there are worries to go along with the people you are talking with. Unless you are real life friends with the other players in your group, you do not really know them. There are many dangers in meeting strangers from the internet. On many occasions, sex offenders and child molesters have been arrested for playing Pokemon Go. Be careful who you are playing with.

Although it is a game designed for enjoyment, there are many dangerous aspects of Pokemon GO. Be very careful when you go out on your next adventure. There is a great sense of nostalgia that goes along with Pokemon, and it is a wonderful way to get yourself and your children exercising. Being careful while playing should be ingrained in the regimen you build around playing. Best of luck and happy hunting!
